Perennials
Perennials are flower that grow every year. Bloom times range from mid April thru Oct. Most perennials have a bloom life of 2 to 6 weeks The key to selecting the right perennials for you yard is:
• Exposure
• Bloom time
• Height
Plant varieties in groups of three or more for a unified look in the garden. Once established (1 -2 years), perennials need very little care. Pruning and dividing will help insure years of beauty in your garden.

Yarrow (Achillea)
Great for dry areas. Fairly long flowering period Does not want fertilizer or too much water

Astilbe (Astilbe)
One of the best plants for shady areas Does best in light shade to filtered sun. Range of flower colors from red to pink to white

Bellflower (Campanula)
Showy plants, long-lived and mostly free of pests and diseases. Excellent border plant. Taller varieties make great specimen plants.

Clematis (Clematis)
One of the most popular climbing vines. Clematis likes to have their tops in the sun but their roots in the shade. Widerange of flower colors.

Tickseed (Coreopsis)
Very long bloom time, from early to late summer. Deadheading will prolong bloom time. Mostly yellow flowers, but newer varieties in pink, red, and orange.

Delphinium (Delphinium)
Strong, dramatic accent in the garden. One of the few perennials that like to be fertilized.

Pink (Dianthus)
Great border plant. Long flowering period from early summer to early fall.

Foxglove (Digitalis)
Another perennial with a dramatic flower stalk. Prefers a filtered sun location.
Some varieties are biennial.

Coneflower (Echinacea)
A must for the sun garden.Mostly shades of purple but new colors of orange and yellow. Need a well drained soil. Can tolerate dryconditions once established.
Great mid-summer flower.

Ferns
Unmatched in the shade garden. Some varieties can tolerate sunny locations as long as they are kept moist. Range of foliage color from green to silver to burgundy.

Blanket Flower (Gaillardia)
One of the longest flowering plants in the landscape, from early summer to mid fall. Need to be deadheaded to prolong flowering. Likes poor soil, so don't fertilize.

Cranesbill (Hardy Geranium)
Great plant with a wide range of adaptability, from sun to shade. Plant heights can range from 6” to 24”. Can flower from late spring to early fall.

Grass
Provide a dramatic accent in the landscape. Height can vary from 12” to 6-8' and from full sun to shade. Warm season grasses prefer a sunny, well drained location.

Coral Bells (Heuchera)
Huge selection of leaf colors: purple, red, yellow, near-black, silver, orange, green. Can tolerate full sun if kept moist, but do better in part sun. Great plant to add a color accent to the garden.

Hosta
When you think of a shade garden, you think of Hosta. Great range of leaf color and plant heights.

Spotted Nettle (Lamium)
Great shade plant. Can tolerate dry conditions once established.

Shasta Daisy (Leucanthemum)
Prolific flowering plant from early summer to late summer. Mostly in shades of white, but some with light yellow color. Can be short lived because of it's heavy flowering.

Catmint (Nepeta)
Long, arching branches give this plant a mounding look. Lavender-blue flowersare produced over a long period in late spring to early summer.

Peony (Paeonia)
Classic garden plant. Various blooming times available, from early, mid and late types. Flowers range from single, semi double and double.

Russian Sage (Perovskia)
Great plant for late summer, early fall color. Silver-green foliage and lavender-blue flowers. Can be pruned in early June to decrease height.

Phlox
Mid summer flowering plant in a wide range of colors. Most varieties are tall,
but spring flowering varieties tend to be short.

Black-eyed Susan (Rudbeckia)
Another garden staple. Mid-summer to early fall flowering in shades of yellow.
Very reliable plant and not bothered by insects.

Salvia
Long flowering perennial with blue, white, or purplish flowers. Should be pruned to the ground after flowering.

Sedum
About as tough a plant as you will find. Great for a dry location, in fact, it will die if it is too wet. Good fall flowering. Groundcover types also.

Speedwell (Veronica)
Two varieties, Eveline and Royal Candles, are very good. The bottom foliage on these varieties does not dry out. Early to late summer flowering.
